GoDaddy study finds that one in three Pinoy entrepreneurs are looking to expand their online presence. The availability and accessibility of digital tools has led to the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and has enabled Filipinos with full-time jobs to conduct parallel online businesses. This has led to the rise of “Side Hustlers” or “Sidelines” which are often undertaken by retirees or stay-at-home parents, becoming the dominant SME segment in the country.

According to the Department of Commerce and Industry (DTI), 73,276 online businesses were registered between March (the start of the Luzon-wide lockdown) and August of this year. As of May of this year, 9,692 new business names were registered in Internet retailing, almost 450% more than in the previous quarter, followed by 33,000 new registrations in June.

The increase in activity among the Filipino online population, whether as sellers or buyers, highlights the importance of security protections for an online business. In fact, over 90% of GoDaddy APAC customers participating in its 2021 Global Website Security Survey see cybersecurity as important to small businesses. Almost 80% of those surveyed agreed that small businesses are at risk of cyber attacks; while half said they had experienced a security breach in the past, and a third described themselves as not knowing how to deal with a cyber attack.

Small and medium-sized businesses that responded to the global survey also recognize that most of their websites deal with personal information, which requires higher standards for website security measures.

“As a small business owner who is growing their business online, it is important to choose a website hosting company that provides tools for domains, website building, e-commerce, and web hosting at the same time. content creation, as well as online security features to help protect your customers and your business. information, ”said Norman Barrientos, GoDaddy’s Marketing Director for South East Asia.

The most common impact faced by customers in all of the countries surveyed is their website downtime, with security breaches often resulting in a greater negative customer experience. Like their APAC counterparts, the majority of Filipino business owners surveyed cited the possible “loss of customer trust” and “exposure of customer data” due to digital security threats, as their most significant. major concerns in the conduct of their online business.

Pinoy entrepreneurs are also concerned about how to deal with website security threats to avoid potential financial loss. After strengthening their digital presence initially in response to a pandemic, SMEs are now forced to take a longer-term view of investment protection.

“When considering building a strong online presence, it’s important that you consider not only how to grow yourself, but also how to manage that growth. Having your own website allows you to funnel leads from various channels into one for deal closing, and also gives you control to meet customer needs for website protection. GoDaddy Web Security service offerings, for example, include firewall and malware protections, as well as site cleanups and secure backups, ”added Barrientos.
