New web portal facilitates access to forecasting products

WMO launched a new web portal to make key weather analyzes and forecast products more easily accessible.

The recent WMO Extraordinary Congress adopted the Unified WMO Policy for the International Exchange of Earth System Data. One of the important outcomes of this decision will be greater and easier access to high-quality analysis and forecasting products for Members.

At the same time, the use of more and better assimilated observational data, in particular that of the Global Basic Observing Network (GBON), will enable designated centers of the Global Data Processing and Forecasting System (GDPFS) to produce better and more accurate analysis and forecasting products, which will then be made available to all Members.

To improve the availability and accessibility of information and products from designated GDPFS centers, a web portal has been developed and is now accessible here. The web portal is a single page for the centers and incorporates essential information, including their focal points and links to websites.

The web portal is designed to perform basic functions on data discovery and accessibility. The list of mandatory GDPFS products for each designated center is displayed interactively, with direct links to the corresponding metadata records on the WMO Information System (WIS). It creates a transparent link between GDPFS and WIS, allowing all members to quickly and easily discover GDPFS product information on WIS.

The web portal also incorporates direct links to the centers’ inventories or open data servers, where available, which provide members with an additional option to obtain GDPFS data. The various options offered by the web portal will significantly improve data discovery and accessibility of GDPFS products.

With GDPFS evolving into its next generation, transparent access to data is one of the key priority areas. WMO will continue to improve the discoverability and accessibility of data to strengthen meteorological, climatological, hydrological and related environmental services around the world, ensuring that no Member is left behind.
