There are 1,000 separate ca.gov websites in the state of California that receive over 20 million visitors each month. At California Department of TechnologyIt’s the job of the CA Web team to provide state agencies and departments with the tools they need to publish information online quickly and easily.
We invite California state entities to join the CDT and the CA Web Team Website to VIP WordPress (WPVIP). Our goal is to migrate all ca.gov sites to this more robust and scalable platform that will meet our future needs.
Last year, our partnership with the Office of Digital Innovation on the COVID-19 website ensured Californians had the information they needed to stay up to date during the pandemic. This showed us how critical web performance is – and we didn’t want to wait until the next crisis to find out if our hosting environment might struggle to meet the demands of our state partners or our residents.
That’s why we’re moving the state’s ca.gov website suite to WPVIP, the enterprise hosting platform owned by the same company that’s responsible for WordPress. WPVIP powers many of the most visited sites in the world. WPVP has its FedRAMP Certificationand their commitment to the government sector makes them an ideal long-term partner for us.
WPVIP ensures that all of our sites will enjoy the same stable, high-performance environment – while maintaining the security of the sites themselves so that visitors can trust the content they find on any state-hosted site.
This is another step in a much longer journey. The recently announced California Design System gives us a path forward for a consistent and accessible interface for each of the new California websites. With the migration of CDT and CA Web Team sites to WPVIP, we will be spending the next few months migrating the remaining 70 WordPress sites managed by the CA Web Team.
If you maintain a website for a state department or agency, or are planning to start one, write U.S! We’d love to help you add your site to the growing family of sites hosted by WPVIP and maintained by the CA Web team.
