aha Studio and Applause Entertainment Partner to Produce Four Bilingual Web Series

Mumbai: The Telugu OTT platform aha on Monday launched an independent content creation and intellectual property entity – aha Studio, which has also partnered with Applause Entertainment to co-produce four premium bilingual series.

Their first offering – a web series called ‘Half-Lion’ will tell the story of former Prime Minister PV Narsimha Rao. Based on the book of the same name written by Vinay Sitapati, the series will be released in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil, the streaming platform announced at an event on Monday.

aha Studio will work on pan-Indian projects and tell stories that have their origins in the South. The entity will self-finance these projects and license them to various platforms once production is complete. “The studio is an initiative to create content remotely from the platform. It helps us to work with the best talent in the country. We are looking for projects which have a pan-Indian appeal but which have their origins in the South, this is our USP ”, said the CEO of aha, Ajit Thakur.

“For us, this partnership is about working with a strong creative and production company,” said Sameer Nair, CEO of Applause Entertainment. “Geetha Arts is one of the largest content creation companies in South India and has been making movies and series for many years, and they launched the aha platform. In order for us to make things bigger, better, and brighter, we’ll need to collaborate with other content studios. This is not the age to go solo. Lots of creative people should work together on projects.

Elaborating on the new web series, Nair said, “We love to tell stories like this. These stories are increasingly told in the language they deserve to be told. ‘1992 scam’ was equally in Hindi and equally in Gujarati. Once we do, I’m sure there will be a lot of people interested in it because it’s such an important story to tell.

The series will be directed by award-winning National director Prakash Jha known for his socio-political films such as “Gangaajal”, “Apaharan”, “Rajneeti” and ‘Aarakshan’ and the “Ashram” web series. “Barely a small percentage of today’s generation know of Rao, ‘the man who changed India’. He brought about changes, systems in our political regime, our economy, our society and our daily life in our country which are now completely irreversible ”, said Jha.

aha Studio had acquired the rights to the book ‘Half-Lion’ and approached Applause Entertainment, who has the expertise to tell stories layered with an ensemble cast. The Nair-led content studio recently won 12 Filmfare OTT Awards for ‘1992 scam’ their biopic on stockbroker Harshad Mehta.

“It has been a remarkable journey with Aha in Telugu so far,” Geetha Arts General Manager and Aha Promoter Allu Aravind said at the event. “We are overwhelmed by the love and support we have received from audiences around the world, which has made aha one of the fastest growing apps in India in the span of two years. year. In what is another pioneering aha effort, we believe aha Studio will help us work with the country’s top creative talent to present world-class entertainment to our global audiences.

The Telugu OTT aha platform is expected to launch in Tamil next year. The platform, which has grown by more than 13 million downloads in the past year and a half, will increase its content investments in 2022 and launch new unscripted formats, including ‘Indian Telugu Idol’.
